Where does HRS shred my confidential paper?

Your confidential material is shredded at our Highland facility. Our certified NAID facility shreds confidential material in an enclosed room that is locked 24 hours a day and is secured by 5 cameras and electronic locks on all entrance points. All material is shredded in accordance to NAID specifications and then sent to the paper mill for pulping and processing into new paper products.

How often should I have my confidential paper shredded?

There are many state and federal regulations on the amount of time that confidential material needs to be securely stored before it can be shredded. For the material that can be shredded without being stored, our recommendation is to shred the material within one month and ensure the confidential material is locked at all times before it is shredded. If you handle a high volume of confidential material, a weekly or every other week service is recommended.

How many confidential containers should I have in my office?

For a small office of 1-5 employees one confidential container should handle your material for a month. For medium to large offices, confidential containers should be placed within close proximity of your employees. Additional containers may be needed by the copy machine, mail room, HR department, executive offices and shipping department.

What is considered confidential material?

Any paper, box or container that has names, titles, social security numbers, birth dates, and other personal & corporate identifiers is considered of confidential nature. In addition, companies may have copyright material that needs to be kept confidential or shredded to ensure it doesn’t fall into the wrong hands. The best rule to use with confidential paper is to use a confidential shredding company to shred all your paper products so your employees don’t have to guess what is confidential or what is not. If you shred all of your paper, there is no question, it is all secured.

Metal Purchasing

What type of metals does HRS purchase?

We purchase all Copper, Brass, Aluminum, Lead and Steel products including aluminum cans and car batteries. We do not purchase entire cars.

Are there any special requirements I need to meet in order to sell metals to HRS?

As of January 1, 2013, the State of Illinois has passed laws that require all metal purchasing companies to obtain identification from each individual selling copper, brass or aluminum (not cans). In addition, individuals will need to sign an acknowledgement that the material has not been stolen as well as provide their car license plate number.

How do I know the weight of the metal I bring in to purchase is accurate?

HRS uses only State-certified scales to weigh your material. Our digital displays are placed for maximum viewing by our customers to ensure they know the exact weight of their material.

When is the best time to come to the recycling facility?

The best time to come to HRS to sell your metal is the first two hours of the day. There is very little waiting time during these two hours.

How can I make the most money with my metals I bring to your facility?

The best way to make the most money from recycling metals is to ensure all metal is sorted by grade of material. Ensuring that material is clean of all steel and insulation also improves the price.


Can I bring cardboard, plastic bottles, newspapers and tin cans to your facility?

Yes. We have containers placed outside of our Highland facility to allow you to recycle 24-hours a day for your convenience.

Do you pay for any recycling products?

HRS will pay for product baled by our customers; however, we will not purchase any loose material.

Do you recycle electronics and TVs?

HRS does NOT recycle electronic or TVs.  Call CJD E-cycling at 618-659-9006 to recycle this material.  HRS does shred hard drives.

What criteria do you require for customers interested in a baler lease?

HRS works with our customers to determine the total quantity of material that can be recycled to determine if a baler lease would be the most advantageous option for all involved. In most cases a large amount of cardboard (3-4 tons) needs to be recycled per month to make a baler lease the most beneficial option.

Can I recycle Styrofoam/packing popcorn?

Styrofoam/packing popcorn is Polystyrene and can be recycled. However HRS cannot recycle this material unless it has been condensed. Styrofoam is made out of 95% air so financially the recycling of this product is prohibitive unless the product is condensed using a heated or pressured condensing machine. An entire truckload of polystyrene that is condensed would fit into a 4x4x4 square and weigh only 1000 lbs.

Can I recycle glass?

HRS does not recycle glass. Broken glass is dangerous to handle and the current market for glass doesn’t allow for the large equipment necessary to safely handle and process it.

Can I recycle motor or food oil?

Yes but HRS does not recycle motor or food oil.

Can I recycle wood?

Yes but HRS does not recycle any wood products.

Can I recycle household batteries?

HRS does not recycle household batteries but we do purchase car batteries.
